HistoryDeveloped by the Department of Veterans Affairs, VistA (Veterans Health Information System and Technology Architecture) is a trusted, proven healthcare information system for both in- and out-patient services used to support the clinical, financial and administrative needs of the VA’s network of 1,300 healthcare facilities, including 160 medical centers. Since it has been developed by the VA and funded through taxpayer dollars, it is available to the public through the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA). VistA includes more than 100 separate but integrated modules, including the acclaimed Computerized Patient Record System (CPRS), an electronic health record (EHR) system front-end.
MELE Health Information Systems utilizes an open-source, nonproprietary software version of VistA developed by the Pacific Telehealth & Technology Hui, a joint venture of the Department of Defense and Department of Veterans Affairs, in conjunction with WorldVistA and other organizations.
The technology transfer of the open-source version of VistA is the outcome of a research project funded and managed by the Pacific Telehealth & Technology Hui to build on the strengths of the Department of Veterans Affairs FOIA VistA. MELE Health Information Systems achieved a solid track record and history in developing and installing VistA in clinics and hospitals outside the Veterans Health Administration system nationally.
